Province-wide Kitchen Party Tour celebrates Métis culture in Medicine Hat
About 100 people gathered at Kin Coulee Park on Wednesday evening as the Otipemisiwak Métis Government brought its Kitchen Party Tour to Medicine Hat, celebrating Métis culture through music, dancing, storytelling and community.
The provincewide tour is designed to connect Métis citizens while inviting non-Indigenous people to learn more about Métis history and traditions.
Otipemisiwak Métis Government President Andrea Sandmaier said the kitchen party has its roots in a time when Métis people often had to conceal their identity.
“Sometimes we had to hide who we were as Métis people,” Sandmaier said.
