The Medicine Hat Mavericks will have another chance to try to defeat the Saskatoon Berries on Friday night at Athletic Park.

On Thursday, the Mavs lost a close 7-5 contest to the Berries. It marks their fourth loss of the season against the team from Saskatoon.

The Mavs had led the game for large portions of the contest. They scored first in the bottom of the third inning when Adam Vulcano came home after Josh Stark reached on a fielding error.

That lead extended to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Nick Hill hit a solo home run.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Berries would take their first lead of the contest on a three-run homer from Ethan Murdoch.

The Mavs would regain a 4-3 lead in the bottom half of the inning with the Vulcano brothers, Johnny and Adam, each driving in a run with singles, with Carter Roth and Hill coming in to score.

Saskatoon would tie things up at four in the top of the eighth inning when Gael Salinas would drive in Murdoch with a single.

The Berries took the lead in the top of the ninth when Nick Stinson hit a three-run homer off JJ Harnett. A few batters later, Harnett would be replaced by Trevor Syer, who got the final out of the inning.

Down 7-4 heading into the bottom half of the ninth, the Mavs were able to come up with one run when Nate King hit a double to score Johnny Vulcano.

Brooks Jones would then come in to pitch for Clay Mixon and get the save. Mixon was credited with the win for the Berries.

Harnett took the loss for the Mavs, while Derek Archer had another strong start on the mound, giving up four runs through eight innings.

The Berries’ record now stands at 27-12, as they sit one game back of the Moose Jaw Miller Express for first in the Western Canadian Baseball League‘s East Division.

Medicine Hat is 10.5 games back of the Berries with a 17-23 record. They remain in third place, with the Regina Red Sox, Weyburn Beavers and Swift Current 57s all not far behind. Regina sits one game behind, Weyburn 1.5 games, and Swift Current is 2.5 games back.

Following Friday’s game, WCBL teams will have players head to the All-Star game in Saskatoon over the weekend.

The Mavs will have five players competing with the East All-Star team for the game.
