Summer giveaway designed to bring shoppers to Medicine Hat’s historic downtown

Jul 15, 2026 | 10:25 AM

Tourism Medicine Hat has launched the Historic Downtown’s Great Big Giveaway to boost foot traffic and support local businesses.

The summer promotion encourages residents and visitors to explore Medicine Hat’s historic downtown.

It launched this week and features 31 participating businesses, with more able to join.

It offers customers the chance to win prizes while shopping, dining or accessing services downtown.

Each participating business will host its own draw for either a $100 or $200 gift card until Aug. 18.

Once the promotion ends, all entries will be combined for a grand prize draw featuring $2,000 in cash, along with two $500 gift cards.

Unlike traditional gift card promotions, winners of the two $500 prizes will be able to choose which participating business they would like the gift card from.

Tourism Medicine Hat Executive Director Jace Anderson said the promotion is designed to celebrate the city’s historic downtown while helping local businesses during the peak summer tourism season.

“We’ve got a great cross-section of food and beverage, retail and service businesses participating,” Anderson said.

“It’s an opportunity for us to celebrate our historic downtown and our business merchants through the busiest part of the summer.”

The campaign is being promoted both locally and to visitors travelling to Medicine Hat to encourage more people to spend time in the downtown core.

Anderson said downtown remains an important destination for visitors because of its historic character, walkability and concentration of locally owned businesses.

“For tourism, historic downtown is one of those locations that’s really important to the overall strength and growth of the community,” Anderson said.

“Anything we can do to support that business community is important.”

He added that the downtown offers visitors a unique connection to Medicine Hat’s history while providing opportunities to shop, dine and experience independently owned businesses.

“This is our neighbours and our friends running these businesses,” Anderson said.

“If we can help drive awareness and encourage people to visit downtown, that’s exactly what these businesses are looking for.”

Participating businesses will display promotional signage and ballot boxes throughout the campaign.

A full list of participating businesses and contest details is available through Tourism Medicine Hat’s website and social media channels.
