Medicine Hat’s portable skate ramp pilot project returns following evaluation

Medicine Hat’s portable skate ramp pilot is back in action with a new indoor home and upgrades aimed at addressing noise concerns that forced a temporary shutdown last month.

The ramps will reopen on Wednesday, July 15, at Kinplex 2 Arena after a temporary pause in June prompted by concerns from nearby residents.

The city says staff added spray foam insulation to the underside of the larger ramps to help reduce sound from skating activity.

Acting Managing Director of Public Services Leah Prestayko says feedback from both residents and the skating community helped guide changes to the project.

Prestayko said in a release that “Pilot projects are designed to evolve, and the input we received helped us identify improvements that allow us to continue offering this exciting recreational amenity in another environment.”

The Kinplex 2 location will provide skaters with a dedicated indoor space, along with access to washrooms and drinking fountains.

The ramps will be available from July 15 to Aug. 20, but will be closed from July 20 to 26 while the arena is used during the Medicine Hat Stampede.

Operating hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from July 15 to 19.

The ramps will reopen after Stampede week with extended hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from July 27 until Aug. 20.

Officials say the project is part of an effort to make better use of existing recreation facilities while expanding skating opportunities in Medicine Hat.
