Echo Dale Regional Park swim lake closed for the remainder of the 2026 season

The Echo Dale Regional Park swim lake will remain closed for the rest of the 2026 season as the City of Medicine Hat awaits the results of an independent review into the June drowning death of a child.

The review is being conducted by the Lifesaving Society of Alberta and NWT Branch, with the city saying it will continue supporting those affected by the tragedy while the process is underway.

Leah Prestayko, the City of Medicine Hat’s managing director of public services, said in a statement, “Our thoughts remain with the family, friends, staff, and community members affected by this heartbreaking loss.”

Prestayko also said, “Keeping the swim lake closed for the remainder of the season is a necessary step as we await the outcome of the independent review.”

The city says all other amenities at Echo Dale Regional Park will remain open, while Hill Pool and Strathcona Pool will continue operating as normal with free public swimming available through support from the Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat.

The city is also moving ahead with a planned water safety awareness campaign that was developed before the incident and is being launched this summer.

Scott Richter, director of parks and recreation, said the campaign was created in response to concerns about drowning and water-related incidents across Canada.

The campaign will include reminders about active supervision of children around water, lifejacket use, safe recreation on the South Saskatchewan River, local water hazards and backyard pool safety.

The city said residents can follow its social media channels in the coming weeks for water safety tips and resources.
