Brooks boy donates a foot of hair to help children facing hair loss

An 11-year-old Brooks boy is hoping to bring confidence and happiness to children facing hair loss after donating more than a foot of his own hair to Wigs for Kids.

Jackson McGrath-Merton decided to grow out his hair for a year and a half after his mother explained that some children are unable to grow hair due to illness or medical treatments.

“When I heard that story, I decided to grow it out to cut my hair for a child to give hair and happiness,” McGrath-Merton said.

After reaching the required length, Jackson had 12 inches of hair cut and donated it through Wigs for Kids.

The organization creates custom-made hairpieces for children who have lost their hair due to medical conditions.

Jackson says growing his hair out took patience, especially when it got in his face, but he was happy to follow through with his goal.

His mother, Caitlin Preston, says she was surprised by the amount of compassion her son showed at such a young age.

“I was completely blown away by the amount of compassion that an 11-year-old could hold,” Preston said.

“I just couldn’t believe that he would make this promise to himself and be able to keep it for so long.”

She says the donation process was simple, with information and forms available through the Wigs for Kids website.

The organization requires hair donations to be at least 12 inches long. Jackson was able to keep some length while still providing enough hair to make a difference.

The most requested hair colours are natural red, light blonde, gray, and dark auburn.

After the donation, Jackson’s mother says Wigs for Kids reached out to thank him, calling him a “hair hero.”

Jackson says he hopes his story encourages others to consider donating their hair, especially if they are already thinking about making a big change.

He says the best part of the experience is knowing his donation will help someone else feel happy.
