Medicine Hat College students receive honours at national Power Engineering awards

Jun 29, 2026 | 12:21 PM

Two Medicine Hat College students have been recognized among the top Power Engineering students in Canada after earning second and third-place finishes in a national achievement competition.

Caleb Garrecht placed second, and Neethu Markose finished third in the 2025 IPE Power Engineering Student Achievement Awards, which recognize top-performing students based on academic achievement and standardized exam results.

The results were announced on June 1, with students formally recognized at the IPECC-Canada Conference in Nova Scotia from June 21 to 23.

The awards rank students completing third-class Power Engineering training, which prepares them to operate and manage complex industrial systems, including boilers and pressurized equipment.

Dr. Morgan Blair, dean of Medicine Hat College’s School of Trades and Technology, said the awards reflect both the students’ dedication and the strength of the college’s Power Engineering program.

Garrecht said the recognition reflects the hard work he put into the program and credited his classmates and instructors for creating a supportive learning environment that helped him succeed.

Markose, who has been in Canada for two years, said the recognition is especially meaningful after adapting to a new country, and praised the support she received from instructors during her transition.

Medicine Hat College has consistently ranked among the top schools in the national awards over the past decade, including first-place finishes in 2014 and 2021, along with several second and third-place results.

Award rankings are based on a weighted formula that combines coursework, worth 35 per cent, with Interprovincial Power Engineering Curriculum Committee exam results, worth 65 per cent.
