The City of Medicine Hat is encouraging residents to spend more time outdoors this month as part of Parks and Recreation Month celebrations across Canada.

To mark the occasion, the city has launched a 75 Hours Challenge, inviting residents to track their time enjoying local parks, trails and recreational amenities throughout June.

The challenge recognizes the 75th anniversary of the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association.

City officials say parks and recreation spaces play an important role in supporting physical and mental health, creating opportunities for social connection and providing accessible ways for people to stay active.

Medicine Hat offers more than 190 kilometres of trails, along with a variety of parks and recreational facilities.

Popular destinations include Echo Dale Regional Park, Police Point Park, Strathcona Island Park and Kin Coulee Park.

Residents are also encouraged to take advantage of local spray parks, outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, disc golf courses, the city’s skate park and pump track.

As part of the month’s activities, the city will host Get Outside and Play Day at Kin Coulee Park on June 13 from 9 a.m. to noon near the Toboggan Hill.

The free event is aimed primarily at children ages six and under and will feature outdoor play activities for families. Pre-registration is required online.

The city is also promoting participation in the Southern Alberta Summer Games, scheduled for July 8 to 11 by Forty Mile County, around the Bow Island area.

Registration for the regional multi-sport event closes on June 11.

Officials say there is no specific requirement for the 75 Hours Challenge, noting that any time spent outdoors, including walking, visiting a park or taking part in recreational activities, would count toward the goal.

The city plans to share recreation ideas and highlight local outdoor spaces throughout the month on its social media channels.
