Medicine Hat Mavericks drop opening game late after strong start against Regina Red Sox

The Medicine Hat Mavericks dropped their season and home opener in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday night at Athletic Park.

Heading into the final inning of the contest, the Mavs held a 6-0 lead on the defending Western Canadian Baseball League winning Regina Red Sox.

A number of the 1,623 fans in attendance had already left the stadium, thinking the game was over.

That’s when the Red Sox rallied in the top of the ninth inning with eight runs to take an 8-6 lead, leaving the opportunity for the Mavs to come back in the bottom of the ninth.

The Mavs did get a runner on base in the ninth inning with two outs, and the tying run was at the plate, but a fly ball was caught to end the game, securing the win for the Red Sox.

Mavs pitcher Davin Hinote started the ninth inning and gave up three runs, and had two runners on base when Brandt Spencer took over on the mound.

The Red Sox would continue to drive in runs. Playing under the lights, the winning runs came in after Mavs outfielder Carson Chan was unable to find a fly ball hit his direction.

Bright spots for the Mavs pitching staff included seven shutout innings from Derek Archer in his first game with the team, followed by a shutout inning from fellow newcomer Trevor Syer in the eighth.

Mavs catcher Jamel Chabot had a strong game, going two for four at the plate, while scoring a run and driving in a pair.

The Mavs will head to Brooks for a contest with the Bombers on Friday at 7:05 p.m.

They will get another pair of chances to defeat the Red Sox with games in Regina on Saturday and Sunday, before returning to Athletic Park on Monday for a game against the Swift Current 57s.
