A tree harvesting event in Cypress County brought the community together, moving a historic teepee project one step closer to reality.

The White Horse Rider Teepee Project aims to build and use seven teepees in Medicine Hat during Canada Day celebrations to share Indigenous culture, traditions and community learning through ceremonies and cultural activities.

Taking place on May 23 near Elkwater, participants selected, cut and prepared trees that will later be raised as teepee poles for the structures.

The construction of the teepee structures requires 18 to 20 poles, each being four to five inches in diameter and about 25 feet tall.

Organizer Davie James said the project and all the work involved with creating the structures are rooted in Indigenous cultural teachings and tradition.

James noted the effort is historic as it marks the first time teepees have been built entirely from the ground up by the community in Medicine Hat, with participants involved in every step of the process, from harvesting trees to painting the canvas coverings.

Participants have harvested enough poles for about one and a half teepees, as organizers said more community support is needed at future harvesting events to collect materials for the remaining structures planned for Canada Day celebrations.
