A yellow warning for heat is in effect for the City of Medicine Hat as temperatures are expected to climb to 33 C over the next several days, with overnight lows near 16 C.

Environment Canada issued the warning at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, flagging a moderate impact level with high forecast confidence, with warm conditions expected to persist for the next four days before moderating into the weekend.

Officials are advising residents and visitors to plan for the heat, including rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler parts of the day, taking regular breaks in air-conditioned or shaded indoor spaces, and drinking plenty of water while avoiding alcohol and caffeine to stay hydrated.

People are also being urged to never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle, even for a short period, and to check on vulnerable individuals, including seniors, infants, young children and those with underlying health conditions.

Heat-related illness risks increase during extended periods of high temperatures, with officials warning to watch for symptoms such as confusion, fainting, unusually high body temperature and lack of sweating.

The warning also said that outdoor workers and people who are socially isolated may face a higher risk as the warm stretch continues through the week.

Environment Canada is asking residents to continue monitoring alerts and forecasts as conditions may change.
