Brooks RCMP warn the public to stay off lakes and ponds as warming temperatures arrive

Mar 24, 2026 | 3:42 PM

Brooks RCMP are warning the public to stay off all lakes and ponds as warming temperatures rapidly deteriorate ice conditions.

Police received a report over the weekend of children playing on the ice at Lake Stafford, highlighting the serious risks associated with being on the ice this time of year. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

The RCMP advise that Spring conditions can cause ice to weaken quickly and unevenly, and what may look solid on the surface can be dangerously thin underneath.

Ice near shorelines, docks, and areas with moving water is especially hazardous and can give way without warning.
