Medicine Hat Cubs take on the Vipers in Red Deer with HJHL title in sight

Mar 21, 2026 | 4:35 PM

The Medicine Hat Cubs will look to complete the series sweep in the Heritage Junior Hockey League finals on Saturday night in Red Deer.

It would be the first Junior B title for the Cubs in 25 years, and their first since joining the HJHL the following season, after winning in the IJHL.

The Cubs defeated the Vipers 6-2 in Game One, and 7-4 in Game Two last weekend to set up a potential clinching game.

Balanced scoring has helped the Cubs outscore their opponent 13-6 over the two games, with not a single Cubs player having a multi-goal game.

Cubs head coach Trent Derzaph said after winning Game Two that the team would dial in during the week and be ready for Game Three.

A motto he has had for his players throughout the year is, “One shift, one period, one game. That’s all it takes.”

Derzaph added that the Cubs will have to play a well-rounded, all-around game to finish the series on Saturday.

“Our forecheck’s been good, our back check’s been great. Our goal timings have been awesome, our defence is awesome, we’ve got guys from all four lines that are scoring. We just got to take it one shift at a time up there, and just enjoy it, and outwork them,” Derzaph said.

“It’s going to be the hardest game of the year, hands down, because they’ll be playing for their lives, and so will we,” he added.

“They’re a great team, honestly. We just got to get up on them quick, right, and roll over them, finish it.”

The final HJHL game in a Cubs uniform is also looming for overage players Kyle Woolridge, Austin Derzaph, Keynan Cairns, and Ethan Burgeson.

A group that could share the excitement of winning a title in their final HJHL game, with the rest of the Cubs players who can build on that success in the years ahead.

A win would also give the team a chance at a provincial title at a tournament hosted in Lloydminster from April 1-5.
