Five-goal second period lifts Medicine Hat Tigers to 9-3 win over the Red Deer Rebels

Mar 20, 2026 | 11:17 PM

Yaroslav Bryzgalov completed his first career Western Hockey League hat-trick with two seconds left in the third period to put a capstone on a 9-3 Medicine Hat Tigers win over the Red Deer Rebels.

The win denies the Rebels a playoff berth and sets the stage for a high-drama Saturday night around the WHL.

Jonas Woo opened the scoring 2:22 into the first period, potting his 29th of the year five seconds into the Tigers lone powerplay of the night.

The game would remain 1-0 heading into the second period, where the Tigers saw goals from Bryce Pickford, Kadon McCann, Kade Stengrim, and a pair from Bryzgalov put them ahead 6-2.

Bryzgalov, Liam Ruck, and Andrew Basha would add singles in the third, helping the Tigers secure the 9-3 win.

The Ruck goal marked his 100th point of the season, joining twin brother Markus as the only two WHL skaters to crest the century mark.

Carter Casey was excellent for the Tigers, turning aside 25 of 28 Red Deer shots.

With the loss, the Rebels remain the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference but now find themselves in peril of missing the postseason.

If Red Deer loses in regulation tomorrow night and the Moose Jaw Warriors win, the Rebels will be eliminated from playoff contention.

Medicine Hat concludes their regular season tomorrow night in the rematch against Red Deer.
