Varsho drives in three but Blue Jays lose 8-5 to Phillies in spring training

CLEARWATER — Toronto starter CJ Van Eyk gave up six runs in 2 1/3 innings as the Blue Jays fell 8-5 to the Philadelphia Phillies in spring training baseball action Thursday.

Trea Turner’s double drove in a pair in Philadelphia’s three-run second inning.

The Phillies tacked four more on Van Eyk and reliever Angel Bastardo in the third, including a solo home run by Alec Bohm.

Centre fielder Daulton Varsho drove in three of Toronto’s four runs over the fourth and fifth innings with a groundout and a two-run double, but the Jays would get no closer.

Toronto catcher Tyler Heineman hit a solo home run in the first inning and scored two runs.

Canadian Zach Pop pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the Phillies to earn a hold.

Toronto (8-10) faces the Minnesota Twins on Friday afternoon in Dunedin, Fla.
