Strong winds and power outages in Medicine Hat on Sunday

Mar 9, 2026 | 11:57 AM

Environment Canada reported strong wind speeds across Alberta on Sunday, and Medicine Hat was no exception, getting up to 107 km/h.

A photo on social media showed a tree fallen on a vehicle.

Power outages were also reported throughout several areas of the city on Sunday afternoon, as snowfall began.

The City has confirmed that four broken power poles and two broken cross arms were the cause of the outages, resulting in 3,085 customers in the city being affected.

Areas impacted by power outages were just off Kingsway Avenue, downtown, and on the Hill.

The outages led to the cancellation of a pair of ringette games at the Moose Rec Centre and a bowling tournament at Panorama Lanes.

Crews worked to isolate and redistribute power around the impacted infrastructure through the afternoon, with power completely restored by 3:45 p.m.

Nearly half of the customers had power restored by 1:45 p.m.

City crews are repairing infrastructure around Medicine Hat.

The city continues to remind the public to use caution around work trucks and allow crews space to work safely.

Across southeast Alberta, wind speeds reached 108 km/h in Rolling Hills, 107 km/h at Onefour, 103 km/h at Ralston, 102 km/h at Seven Persons, 100 km/h at Irvine, and 93 km/h in Bow Island.

If you see a downed power line in Medicine Hat, it’s advised to stay at least 10 metres back and contact the city.
