Weather Warning

Cold warning for Medicine Hat and most of the Prairies

Jan 23, 2026 | 6:38 AM

Bone-chilling cold warnings are popping up across much of the country on Friday morning.

Environment Canada says some regions can expect lows of minus 50 Celsius, with the wind chill.

The warnings start in eastern Alberta and continue east across the country.

Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning for cold in Medicine Hat on Friday morning.

Wind chill values of minus 40 to 45 C are expected during the morning.

The temperature and wind chill are expected to moderate by the afternoon, but wind chill values near minus 40 C may return in the evening for a few communities in the area.

A slow warming trend is expected to begin this weekend.

It’s advised to avoid extended periods outdoors.

The weather provider stated that extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

It recommends dressing warmly and in layers that you can remove if you get too warm, and the outer layer should be wind resistant, with synthetic and wool fabrics providing good insulation.

Environment Canada stated that if it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.

Another recommendation is to make sure your home is well-insulated, the heating system is working efficiently, and cracks and drafts are sealed.

To report severe weather, send an email to ABstorm@ec.gc.ca, call 1-800-239-0484 or post reports on X using #ABStorm.
