MacKenzie reappointed as chair of Medicine Hat College Board of Governors

Medicine Hat College has announced the reappointment of Sarah MacKenzie as chair of its Board of Governors.

The Alberta government appoints the Board of Governors to provide strategic direction and oversight, ensuring the College fulfills its mandate as a comprehensive community college.

Its members represent the interests of students, employees, and the public, guiding the institution’s long-term vision while supporting operational priorities that strengthen education and community impact.

MacKenzie has served on the Board since 2019 and was first appointed chair in April 2022.

Under her leadership, the College said that the Board has advanced governance renewal and approved new programs that respond to regional needs, including Sport & Event Marketing and Management, Service Dog & Canine Studies Management, Addictions Counselling, and Pharmacy Technician.

The College said that these additions reflect its commitment to aligning education with workforce and community priorities and fostering growing regional support for the college.

“I am proud of the work accomplished to strengthen Medicine Hat College and its impact in the region,” said MacKenzie in a statement.

“Together, the Board has renewed our governance, expanded program offerings, and deepened advocacy for the vital role we play in our community.”

MacKenzie brings experience in governance, business management, and community advocacy.

She is a licensed real estate professional with Sarah MacKenzie & Co. Royal LePage Community Realty, serves on Tourism Medicine Hat’s Sport & Event Advisory Committee, and holds leadership roles in provincial and local lacrosse associations.

She also contributes to community development through the Southeast Alberta Community Foundation Grants Committee and previously served as President of the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce and Chair of the Invest Medicine Hat Advisory Committee.

MacKenzie received the King Charles III Coronation Medal in June 2025 for her service to post-secondary education and community development.

Looking ahead, MacKenzie emphasized the Board’s role in shaping the future.

“Community engagement is central to our work as a comprehensive community college,” McKenzie said.

“As we look forward, I’m excited about visionary opportunities such as the Centre for Community Wellness project,” she added.

“Over my next term, I plan to build on our momentum, ensuring we continue to meet the needs of our students and the communities we serve.”
