Medicine Hat Interpretive Centre inviting families and volunteers for two Christmas programs

Dec 11, 2025 | 2:29 PM

The Medicine Hat interpretive program invites birders of all ages to take part in two upcoming events this month, with the annual Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 21 and the youth-focused Christmas Bird Count for Kids on Dec. 14, both at Police Point Park.

The Christmas Bird Count for Kids, taking place on Dec. 14, is a kid-friendly bird-watching walk at Police Point Park.

The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program will lead the two-hour outing, which starts at 10 a.m. outside the Nature Centre.

The children participating will learn how to use binoculars and simple photo guides to spot and identify local species.

The program gives young birders a chance to join the tradition in an accessible way.

The Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 21 is the continent’s longest-running citizen science project, dating back to 1900, coordinated by the National Audubon Society and Birds Canada.

The data collected provides researchers with key information about winter bird populations and helps guide conservation decisions. Residents of all ages and experience levels are invited to join the free event.

The Participants can survey birds within the Medicine Hat count circle by walking a designated area and recording all species seen or heard, or they can contribute by watching activity at their backyard feeders.

Those interested in taking part in either program can register online at the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program website.
