Organizations in Medicine Hat and area receive donation from energy company

Several organizations in the Medicine Hat area are benefitting from donations announced by Acciona Energy on Tuesday.

The energy company has its North American head office in Chicago, and operates Forty Mile Wind Farm near Bow Island.

It is donating $270,000 to non-profit organizations in the area as part of its 2025 social impact management strategy.

Through the strategy, the company says it prioritizes dialogue, shared value creation, and long-term local development, ensuring that its renewable energy assets contribute not only to decarbonization but also to stronger, more resilient, and more inclusive communities.

• The Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub in Medicine Hat will install solar panels to offset its energy costs.
• The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society will use the funds to renovate its first-aid room, children’s activity area and family room.
• Forty Mile Regional Family Community Support Services in Bow Island will use the donation to support its Holiday Meal program and the Meals on Wheels program that delivers meals to the elderly and home-bound community members.

Acciona Energy said that these donations underscore the company’s dedication to fostering community development, education and environmental sustainability in the regions where it operates.

Adding that they are committed to delivering tangible, positive impact in every community where they operate.

Root Cellar Executive Director Melissa Mullis said having companies like Acciona continue to invest in the Root Cellar means so much to them and to the families they serve.

“Their commitment shows what true community partnership looks like, businesses stepping forward to create long-term solutions that strengthen our entire region,” Mullis said.

“We anticipate having the solar panels installed early in the new year, and this donation will have a significant impact on reducing our long-term energy costs,” she added.

“Savings from this project will allow us to redirect more of our resources directly into food programs and supports for families, creating lasting impact well into the future.”

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society communications and fundraising coordinator, Kali McGougan, said the multiple contributions they have received from Accionia Energy have transformed the shelter in ways individuals and families will feel every day.

“One of the key objectives of our capital campaign was to remove accessibility barriers. With their first gift of $145,000, we were able to complete vital additions, including accessible bedrooms, washrooms, and a main-floor laundry, ensuring we can offer a safe and barrier-free environment to our clients,” McGougan said.

“Their second gift of $80,000 allowed us to renovate our first aid room, children’s area, and family room, creating brighter, safer, and more supportive spaces,” she added.

“We are deeply grateful for Acciona Energy’s commitment to strengthening the communities in which they operate.”

The Forty Mile Wind Farm, located near Bow Island, has 49 wind turbines generating up to 280 megawatts into the Alberta power grid.

Acciona Energy’s head office is based in Spain and operates in over 40 countries worldwide.
