Weather conditions temporarily suspend transit services in Medicine Hat, police put out travel advisory

Transit service in Medicine Hat has were temporarily suspended shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday until 3:15 p.m.

A social media post from the city said the decision was made due to difficulties navigating hills with this rapid amount of snowfall.

Adaptive transit and on-demand transit services were also temporarily suspended.

Transit had said it would re-evaluate every half-hour until buses could safely travel their routes.

The city continued to update the public through a post on its social media page.

The city added that it apologized for the inconvenience the temporary delay may have caused, but the safety of its passengers and drivers remains its top priority.

Delays can be expected with routes as transit is started back up.

The Medicine Hat Police Service is advising motorists to exercise caution as winter driving conditions have developed in and around the city.

Police said that snowfall and rapidly dropping temperatures have created snow-covered and icy roads, particularly on the hills, bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces.

Drivers are encouraged by police to:

• Reduce speed and allow extra time for travel.

• Increase following distance to allow additional stopping space.

• Use headlights to improve visibility.

• Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, which can lead to loss of control.

• Be prepared for snow-clearing equipment working on roadways.

They also remind pedestrians to use caution, as sidewalks and crosswalks may be slippery.

Road crews are actively working to improve conditions; however, police say travel may remain hazardous until temperatures rise and maintenance is completed.
