Medicine Hat resident wins Alberta Inspiration Award after being recognized for community work

Nov 13, 2025 | 6:02 PM

Resident in Medicine Hat, Christina Johnson has won the 2024 Alberta Inspiration Award in the Research and Innovation category.

Johnson has been the Executive Director of the Sanare Centre in Medicine Hat for 15 years dedicated her career to helping people and communities heal from violence.

In 2021, Johnson led efforts that resulted in the opening of Southeastern Alberta’s Child Advocacy Centre.

From developing innovative programs to eradicate gender-based violence through strength-based men and boys’ programs, and school and community education, Johnson has strongly impacted the community.

After years of consultations, community, collaborations and academic review of evidence-based practices, Johnson helped develop and implement a program called ‘EvolveMENt.’

This program fosters participants’ strengths as leaders and mentors for young men in rural and small urban centres, while empowering men to do gender-based violence prevention work in their own communities.

The Inspiration Awards celebrate outstanding leaders who have made a transformative difference in promoting healthy relationships and preventing violence across Alberta’s communities.

Johnson said she is humbled by her peers nominating her for this award.

“I’m proud of my team because I work and develop programming like this with a group of others,” Johnson said

“And sometimes I think they make me look better than I am. So I’m very grateful for the team here at Sanare.”
