Safety tips for Halloween night in Medicine Hat from the police service

Oct 31, 2025 | 10:38 AM

Halloween is a fun time for children to dress up as their favourite characters and go trick-or-treating through the neighbourhood.

While it’s an exciting time, the Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Service have provided children, parents, and homeowners with some simple safety tips to help ensure Halloween night is fun and safe.

The tips from the police service include:

  • Trick-or-treating in groups in familiar neighbourhoods. Younger children should be accompanied by a trusted adult who accompanies them to the door of every home they approach.
  • Reviewing road safety rules, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, and creating a specific route for children to follow. Stay on one side of the street and cross over at the end of the block instead of crisscrossing.
  • Carrying a flashlight for extra visibility and only visiting homes where the lights are on. Remind children never to enter a stranger’s home or vehicle.
  • Ensuring costumes are weather-appropriate and easily visible by incorporating bright colours and reflective tape. Avoid masks that limit visibility and consider using face paint instead.
  • Inspecting all candy and throwing away any unwrapped or unsealed items.
  • Homeowners should turn on exterior lights so children can easily find the front door, and keep candles or other flammable items out of reach of children.
  • Securing pets for the evening, as they may become frightened by unfamiliar visitors.
  • For adults, if you plan to go out to celebrate, make sure you have a safe ride home.

The tips from the fire and emergency service include:

  • To use battery-operated candles or glow sticks instead of open-flame candles in pumpkins and decorations.
  • Make sure to keep costumes and decor away from heat sources such as heaters, candles, and light bulbs.
  • Ensure trick-or-treaters can see and be seen by using reflective tape, flashlights, or glow sticks.
  • Reminding children to stay on sidewalks and to cross streets safely.
