Medicine Hat Tigers’ Casey named WHL Rookie of the Week; Christie selected to play for Canada

The Western Hockey League announced Medicine Hat Tigers goaltender Carter Casey as the Sandman WHL Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025.

The 17-year-old Casey recorded his first career WHL shutout with a 31-save effort on Saturday, Oct. 11, in a 5-0 win over the Portland Winterhawks at Co-op Place.

Through three games to start his WHL career, Casey is 2-1-0-0 with a 1.61 goals-against average, .944 save percentage, and one shutout.

Born in December 2007, Casey is eligible for the 2026 NHL Draft.

Tigers goaltender Cash Christie, who’s currently a member of the South Alberta Hockey Academy U18 Prep team, has been named to Canada White for the U17 World Challenge in Truro, N.S.

The 16-year-old goaltender has played three games with SAHA this season. Christie is 2-0-0, with a 2.59 goals-against-average, and a .926 save percentage.

He was a fourth-round pick of the Tigers in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft.

The 2025 U17 World Challenge begins Nov. 2. Teams will play two preliminary round games before the medal round, which concludes November 8 with medal games.

The event will also feature pre-tournament games in three different Nova Scotia communities on Oct. 31.
