Medicine Hat Mavericks launch varsity program to develop local high school players

Oct 15, 2025 | 11:14 AM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks organization has announced a new high-performance program to begin in the Fall of 2026.

Mavericks Varsity is designed to give high school baseball players from Medicine Hat, southern Alberta and Saskatchewan the opportunity to train, develop, and compete at the highest level while staying close to home.

“This program is about giving kids from Medicine Hat and surrounding area a chance to grow, compete, and get noticed, ” said Mavericks owner and general manager Greg Morrison in a press release.

“The Mavericks have always been about building community through baseball, and Mavericks Varsity is the next step in that mission.”

Morrison will be the program director for Mavericks Varsity.

He has 12 years of professional baseball experience and has represented Canada seven times internationally.

The program is open to players in Grades 10-12 from the area and will compete against other regional programs and academies, running from Sept. 1 to April 30.

Recruitment will be undertaken by the group, but forms of interest are encouraged for those interested in the program.

The launch of Mavericks Varsity, helps expand the development pathway for local and regional talent, providing a next step for athletes with ambitions to play college baseball and beyond.

The Mavericks have been a part of the baseball community in Medicine Hat for over 20 years through the summer collegiate team competing in the Western Canadian Baseball League.
