Medicine Hat’s Big Marble Go Centre hosts professional art exhibition for the first time

Oct 9, 2025 | 4:00 PM

For the first time in its history, the Big Marble Go Centre is hosting a professional art exhibition.

The exhibition, titled Pal·imp·sest, will be on display from Oct. 9 to Nov. 4, 2025 in the main hallway near the fieldhouse entrance.

It features work by Calgary-based artist David Harrison, who creates abstract, rhythmic pieces using fragments of fallen urban graffiti.

The initiative is made possible through a collaboration between the City of Medicine Hat’s parks and recreation department and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts’ Travelling Exhibition (TREX) program.

“We are always looking for ways to enhance the recreation visitor experience and promote the amazing people, landscapes and history of southern Alberta,” said Michael Ractliffe, superintendent of recreation with the City of Medicine Hat.

“There are strong links between arts, recreation and well-being. Adding TREX exhibitions is a great way to bridge arts and recreational environments and build on the fundamental community focus of our facility.”

While most of the 34 TREX host venues across Alberta are schools and libraries, Big Marble Go Centre is currently the only recreation facility in southeast Alberta to participate in the program.

The collaboration stems from a broader effort by the City to position recreation facilities as inclusive community hubs.

In October 2024, Big Marble Go Centre also partnered with the Medicine Hat Public Library to open a micro-library within the building.

“TREX is always eager to welcome new host venues and enhance access to artwork in Albertan communities,” said Sierra Zukowski, program manager and curator for TREX Southeast.

“It’s especially rewarding to bring art to people where they might not expect it — it adds more vibrancy and enriches people’s day-to-day lives.”

The City has confirmed that Big Marble Go Centre will continue to host periodic TREX exhibitions throughout 2026.
