Cypress County declares weekend wildfire extinguished

Cypress County Emergency Services declared the wildfire east of Dunmore, and located south of Highway 1 near Range Road 40 extinguished as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Since the fire started around noon on Sunday emergency services has worked with Alberta Wildfire crews to extinguish hot spots.

Operations included the uses of a structural sprinkler protection unit, wildland fire apparatus, and a complete grid patrol of the fire area.

Approximately 12 homes were temporarily evacuated as part of the response.

While no homes were affected by the fires, some smaller structures were damaged.

In a statement the county said as always, the safety of its residents is its top priority.

“We are grateful for all the support and for the cooperation of the public during this response. It could have been so much worse,” a statement from Cypress County read.

Several groups provided assistance to the Cypress County Emergency Services including Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services, HALO Air Ambulance, Alberta Wildfire through the Elkwater Fire Crew, CFB Suffield, County of Newell, City of Brooks, Alberta Sherrifs, RCMP, AHS with EMS, and residents from Cypress County.

Country crews will continue to monitor the area in the coming days.
