Nominees for Medicine Hat area set as candidate deadline passes for Alberta municipal elections

Monday, Sept. 22 was the final day for candidates to register for the upcoming municipal elections in Alberta.

Election day is set for Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

CITY OF MEDICINE HAT

The City of Medicine Hat was the busiest in the area with six candidates registered for mayor, and a record 39 seeking one of the eight councillor positions.

The mayor candidates include current Mayor Linnsie Clark, current Councillor Andy McGrogan, former Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes, former Councillor Kris Samraj, with Alan Rose and Mark Fisher also seeking councils top position.

Councillors seeking re-election include Robert Dumanowski, Shila Sharps, and Alison Van Dyke.

Not seeking re-election are current councillors Darren Hirsch, Ramona Robins, Allison Knodel, and Cassie Hider.

Familiar faces from previous councils running for councillor positions include a former mayor and councillor in Ted Clugston, and former Councillors Bill Cocks and Brian Varga.

The full candidate list of candidates on the city website also includes the trustees nominations in Medicine Hat’s two school divisions.

MEDICINE HAT PUBLIC SCHOOL DIVISION

The Medicine Hat Public School Division has 13 candidates running with five positions on its board of trustees.

Seeking re-election are current Chair Catherine Wilson, Vice Chair Pat Grisonich, and Trustees Deborah Forbes and Yvonne Sissons.

Trustee Rick Massini is not seeking re-election.

The several candidates looking to get into the trustee position include Danielle Beach, Jessie Bishop, Gwendoline Dirk, Megan Hilgendorf, Jan Kline-Farmer, Wesley Paterson, Becky Porier, Quinn Skelton, and Jeneal Vargo.

MEDICINE HAT CATHOLIC BOARD OF EDUCATION

There area 10 candidates running with five trustee positions open for the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education.

Seeking re-election are Board Chair Kathy Glasgo and Trustees Bernie Kinch and Dick Mastel.

Not seeking re-election are Vice Chair Deacon Robert Risling and Trustee David Leahy.

The candidates also seeking trustee positions include Deanna Alford, Monica Braat, Alicia Doud, Patty Jo Folliott, Lindsay Paul Heier, Chuck Hellman, and Randy West.

PRAIRIE ROSE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Prairie Rose Public Schools had acclaimed four candidates for trustee positions as of the nomination deadline.

However, a nomination period will be extended each day from 10 a.m. until noon until a candidate is found for Ward 1 which includes the Oyen area.

Ward 3 which includes Redcliff and Dunmore had incumbent Trustee Pam Cursons registered by the original deadline, but she could not be acclaimed as two positions are required.

A call for nominations resulted in a pair of candidates coming forward, and a vote will now be held for Ward 3. Darren Howes and Lee Sheward both put their names in to be considered for the position.

but had still required two more trustees, with one needed for ward one in the Oyen area, and a second trustee for ward three which includes Redcliff and Dunmore.

The nomination period has been extended to Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon, and will continue to be extended if candidates aren’t found.

Acclaimed candidates include Janel Vossler for Ward 2 which includes the Elkwater area, incumbent Graeme Dennis for Ward 4 including Seven Persons and Ralston, incumbent board vice-chair Patty Rooks for Ward 5 including Bow Island and Burdett, and incumbent Nancy Haraga for Ward 6 including Foremost.

Not seeking re-election are Lois Dedwell from Ward 1, Cathy Hogg from Ward 2, and Shauna VanderSpruit for Ward 3.

CYPRESS COUNTY

Cypress County has five of its nine wards contested, with four councillor candidates acclaimed.

Michelle McKenzie will remain as the representative for Ward 1, which includes the Hilda and Schuler area.

Lloyd Want returns to represent the Elkwater area in Ward 3.

Dustin Vossler will again be the councillor for Ward 6, which includes the area of Seven Persons, south of both Highway 3 and Township Road 120.

Keith Ritz remains as the councillor for Ward 9 and the Suffield area.

In the contested ridings, incumbent Blaine Brost will go against Michael Teliske for Ward 2, which includes the Irvine and Walsh area.

Incumbent Robin Kurpjuweit is up against Bill Thompson in Ward Four, an area that includes south and north east of Dunmore.

Ward 5 includes the Dunmore and Veinerville areas and has current Reeve Dan Hamilton up against Della Burkitt.

With Richard Oster not seeking re-election, a new councillor is guaranteed for Ward 7 which includes Desert Blume and the areas north of Seven Persons. Ana McFadyen and Garry Procter are both seeking that position.

Incumbent Shane Hok will be challenged by Les Woodrow in Ward 8, which is the area near Redcliff.

TOWN OF REDCLIFF

The Town of Redcliff shows two candidates running for mayor and 10 running for one of the six councillor positions.

Current Councillor Chris Czember is seeking the mayor position, as is Don McRobb.

Current Mayor Dwight Kilpatrick will instead run for council next term, he is joined by current Councillors James Allen, Cathy Crozier, Larry Leipert, and Matthew St. Pierre in seeking re-election to council.

Jim Steinke is the only current councillor not running.

Also seeking a position on council are Bernie Bakker, Shawna Gale, Eric Solberg, Brandie Burns, and Korey Lindberg.

TOWN OF BOW ISLAND

Nominations in the Town of Bow Island ended with current Mayor Gordon Reynolds being acclaimed.

However, there will be a vote to determine the six councillors in the community with eight individuals seeking the positions.

Four incumbents are running looking to retain their spot including Denise Curliss, David Harrison, William Ressler, and Shannon Strom.

Also seeking the councillor position are Randi Belcourt, Robin Knibbs, Lowell Leffler, and Brad Parkinson.

No seeking another term on council are Terrie Matz and Kim Mitchell

COUNTY OF FORTY MILE

Forty Mile County has acclaimed candidates in six of its seven wards with only one candidate running in each.

Incumbents include current Reeve Stacey Barrows in Ward 3 for Skiff, and Councillors Diane Harty in Ward 2 for Etzikom and Manyberries, Don Drake in Ward 6 for Burdett, and Jim Babe in Ward 7 for Bow Island.

New to council next term will be Gary Cochrane in Ward 1 for Aden and Pearl Jones in Ward 4 for Orion, Conquerville and Maleb.

A nomination extension is in place for Ward 5 including 40 Mile Park with the nomination period extended each day from 10 a.m. until noon until a candidate is found.

Not seeking re-election are Joan Hughson in Ward 1, Craig Widmer for Ward 4, and Allen Kuizenga for Ward 5.

CITY OF BROOKS

The City of Brooks will have a new mayor for the next term as current Mayor John Petrie will not be seeking re-election.

There are two individuals running for the position including Norm Gerestein and current councillor Joel Goodnough.

There are 12 candidates looking to secure votes for one of the six councillor positions with the city.

Incumbents running include Mohammed Indriss and Marissa Wardrop.

Current councillors not seeking re-election are Bill Prentice, Jon Nesbitt, and Ray Juska.

Looking to secure a councillor position this year are Emelcris Aurelio, Carly Bryant, Chad Falkenberg, Clayton Heck, Jackie Johnson, Ryan ‘Skippy’ Mobbs, Mara Nesbitt, Anne-Marie Philipsen, Paul Post, and Mike Regner.

County of Newell

The County of Newell will see candidates acclaimed in seven of its nine divisions.

Acclaimed are Dan Baumgarten in Division 1 for Rolling Hills, incumbent Adena Marie Skanderup in Division 2 for Tilley, incumbent Lynette Kopp for Division 3 for Patricia, incumbent Greg Skriver for Division 5 south of Brooks, incumbent Kelly Christman with Division 6 for Bassano, incumbent Neil Johnson with Division 7 north of Brooks, and incumbent Reeve Arno Doerksen with Division 9 for Rosemary and Gem.

Voting will take place for Division 4 including Cassils, Bow City, Rainier, and Scandia as well as Division 8 for Duchess.

Running in Division 4 are Ben Commodore and incumbent Holly Johnson.

Seeking the position for Division 8 are Benjamin Hofer, Shawn Dahl, and Terry Neigum.

Current councillors not seeking re-election are Dan Short in Division 1 and Amanda Philpott in Division 8.
