The Calgary Hitmen officially announced the signing of Dunmore’s Ty Hynes to a Western Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement on it’s social media channel on Monday.

Hynes said he was over the moon to sign with the Hitmen.

“I’ve worked for so long to get to this point, and to finally achieve my goal feels amazing,” Hynes said.

“But there isn’t enough thanks that can go out to my teammates and coaches who have pushed and helped me along the way. Especially my family, who stuck by my side through this whole journey.”

The 17-year-old forward has played in two regular season contest already with the Hitmen, earning an assist on the teams first goal of the season.

He also had a unique rookie lap in warm ups, skating alongside 14 other newcomers for the Hitmen on opening night.

“Taking the rookie lap with all 13 other guys was like something out of a movie,” Hynes said.

“With such a young group, I believe we have great potential as a team. All the guys deserve to be where they are right now, so it’s great to see them achieve their goals as well,” he added.

“Being in the lineup and playing on a line with two great players gave me the opportunity to go out and get an assist on the first goal of the season. It gave me a feeling I can’t even describe, and I couldn’t have done it without my line mates, of course.”

Hynes linemates on the games opening goal were forwards Kale Dach and Ethan Moore.

Playing his second regular season game in the home of the Hitmen, but also the Calgary Flames was an unforgettable moment for Hynes.

“The experience at the Saddledome for our home opener was one of the more exciting things I’ve ever experienced,” Hynes said.

“It felt sort of surreal and almost like a full-circle moment. From going and watching the Teddy Bear Toss, a couple of Hitmen and Flames games to now actually playing on the ice was something I had thought about for a while, so to make it a reality was amazing.”

Hynes said that his farther Darryl has had the biggest impact on his hockey career.

“My dad has 100% been the biggest influence on my hockey career. He’s had me on skates since before I could walk and pushed me ever since then to be the best I can be,” Hynes said.

“Always motivating me to push harder. When I look back, I realize I wouldn’t be where I am without him. He’s been by my side since I first stepped on the ice, so I see this as not only a personal accomplishment but one I share with him as well.”

Hynes went undrafted in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft, but the next season he was put on the protected list of the Hitmen.

“I think being undrafted taught me the lesson that nothing is going to be given to you, and everything will have to be earned,” Hynes said.

“I also learned very quickly that you can’t let one moment like the WHL Draft define you as a player. I see so many players think they can’t make it if they don’t get drafted, but that’s not the reality,” he added.

“If you’re dedicated and willing to put in the work and build your confidence, you can achieve the goal of playing in the WHL.”

That confidence also shone through in the pre-season for Hynes with a pair of assists in three contests with the Hitmen, helping him make the opening day roster.

Hynes played last season with the South Alberta Hockey Academy U18 Prep team where he had 39 points in 40 games across the Canadian Sports School Hockey League‘s regular season and playoffs.

He had played three straight seasons in the CSSHL with the SAHA U17 Prep team in 2023-24, and the year prior in 2022-23 with the Edge School U15 Prep team out of Calgary.

Hynes is also an alumni of the both the Medicine Hat Minor Hockey and Irvine Minor Hockey programs.

He was a member of the South East Athletic Club Tigers U15 AAA team during the 2021-22 season.
