Canstruction back at Medicine Hat Mall

Sep 20, 2025 | 8:00 AM

Canstruction is being hosted at the Medicine Hat Mall again this year with money raised in support of the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub, the local food bank in Medicine Hat.

Canstruction is a competition where teams build structures made out of non-perishable food items to compete for awards.

The awards are broken up into categories including: Best Meal, Structural Ingenuity, Best Original Design, Most Cans, Best Use of Labels, and People’s Choice awards.

The winners from each local competition then go on to compete internationally in these categories.

The teams competing at the mall this year are Canadian Fertilizer and Methanex.

The Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub provides food access and connects people with resources to address the root causes of food insecurity.

Melissa Mullis, Root Cellar executive director, said Canstruction would not be possible without the support of the participants.

“Every single year they have a really big competition between the two companies and every single year they just bring it and they create the coolest structures,” said Mullis.

“And, of course they’re very thoughtful with the food that they purchase and so we’re able to get that food and feed a lot of families with it as well.”

All the food used to create the structures is used to support individuals by the Root Cellar.

The structures will be on display until Sept. 25.
