Alberta gained 30K jobs in June, leading national growth

It was a good month for jobs in Alberta.

That is according to a new report from Statistics Canada, which says the province’s unemployment rate fell from 7.4 per cent in May to 6.8 per cent in June.

Employment increased by 30,000, thanks to the additions of 51,300 full-time positions. The number of part-time jobs fell by 21,300.

It was the second gain in jobs in the last three months.

Alberta led the country in employment growth in June, followed by Quebec (+23,000) and Ontario (+21,000).

Some of the best-performing industries in the province were finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing (+8,300); manufacturing (+6,800); and healthcare and social assistance (+6,700).

Others saw declining employment, such as construction (-7,800); “other services (except public administration)” (-3,600); and public administration (-3,500).

Red Deer had the biggest improvement to its unemployment rate, falling by 0.7 per cent to 5.5 per cent in June.

Calgary’s jobless rate was 7.4 per cent, falling by 0.4 per cent.

The rate was unchanged in Lethbridge, resting at 5.2 per cent. The city’s numbers appear to show people exited the job market as the participation rate fell by 0.8 per cent.

Edmonton had a small increase in its unemployment rate of 0.2 per cent to 7.5 per cent.
