Officials says it marks a significant operational milestone for HALO and reinforces its ongoing commitment to delivering lifesaving care throughout southern Alberta.

The latest aircraft, introduced at a special event in February at the Medicine Hat Regional Airport, has now officially become HALO-1.

The previous helicopter will continue to operate as HALO-2.

On June 29, HALO-1 completed its inaugural emergency medical scene call to the Bow Island area, immediately demonstrating its readiness and enhanced capabilities.

Three days later, HALO-1 also responded to an aerial reconnaissance mission in partnership with Cypress County Emergency Services south of Cypress Hills to assess a wildfire.

Shortly after takeoff, HALO-1 was rerouted to another emergency call south of Dunmore, highlighting its agility and vital role in regional emergency response.

“Our partnership with HALO is truly invaluable. Because of this collaboration, we were able to stage our resources directly at the fire hall, which resulted in our response time being seven minutes faster,” said the Cypress County Emergency Services Fire Chief, Jason Linton.

“When you are facing fast-moving fires and rapidly evolving emergencies, those minutes can make all the difference. We are proud to work alongside partners like HALO to keep our region safe.”

The latest HALO-1 is a powerful symbol of HALO’s deep connection to the communities it serves.

As HALO’s first fully branded aircraft, it features a design inspired by Southern Alberta’s sweeping prairies, rolling hills, and the rocky mountains.

The design proudly includes the iconic Medicine Hat Teepee, representing HALO’s home base and commitment to the region.

“One of the greatest advantages of this highly visible design is that when this aircraft takes to the skies, there is no doubt it is HALO,” said Paul Carolan, HALO’s Chief Executive Officer.

“With its striking orange accents and distinctive markings, it is instantly recognizable, reassuring communities that help is on the way.”

Carolan continued,”This helicopter embodies the unwavering support of our community, the trust placed in our mission, and our promise to deliver lifesaving care wherever and whenever it is needed. The advanced capabilities and improved operational efficiency allow us to respond faster and more effectively, ensuring we are ready when every minute counts.”

While HALO will continue to staff only one helicopter, having a second aircraft ensures we never have to pass on a call due to maintenance or operational downtime.

This added capacity allows us to continue supporting law enforcement, fire services, and search and rescue operations without interruption and to continue building strong, trusted relationships through community outreach.
