Tigers’ forward Gavin McKenna nominated for CHL Player of the Year

Medicine Hat Tigers forward Gavin McKenna has been named one of three finalists for the CHL’s Player of the Year award.

McKenna put up a staggering 129 points through just 56 games this season, while leading the Tigers in postseason scoring en route to their sixth WHL championship in franchise history.

McKenna also set a CHL record this season by establishing a remarkable 54-game point streak, the longest in the CHL since 2000.

If he is chosen, it would be the fourth straight year the award has gone to a WHL player.

Logan Stankoven, Conor Bedard, and Jagger Firkus won the honour the last three seasons.

McKenna could also become the third-youngest player ever to win the award, behind only John Tavares in 2007 and Sidney Crosby in 2004.

McKenna was named the WHL Player of the Year last month, becoming the first Tiger since Kris Russell to receive the award.

No Tigers player has ever been named CHL Player of the Year before.

The other nominees are Michael Misa of the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit and Johnathan Fauchon of the QMJHL’s Rimouski Oceanic.

The winner will be announced Friday during the 2025 CHL awards in Toronto.
