Update 8:30 am

Environment Canada has cancelled a special air quality statement that was issued at 4:45 Monday morning.

However the forecast for Medicine Hat still calls for local smoke.

The air quality index fell to 5 at 8 am, but is expected to go back to a 6 today before falling to 4 tonight.

Those levels are still considered to be a moderate risk.

Earlier story follows.

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for Medicine Hat, due to smoke from western wildfires.

The smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility in some areas.

Conditions can vary as wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances, and vary considerably from hour to hour.

Health risks do increase as smoke levels rise.

Symptoms like eye, nose and throat irritation may be experienced, along with headaches or mild cough.

More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough.

If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance.

People more likely to be impacted by outdoor air pollution, including people aged 65 and older, pregnant people, infants and young children, people with an existing illness or chronic health condition, and people who work outdoors, should reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.

When indoors, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.

Extreme heat conditions add to the concern with people advised to make staying cool a priority.

Conditions are expected to improve later tonight.
