Road construction, detours and traffic in Medicine Hat

📋 Overview

There are 22 active construction projects and 10 future projects, according to the City of Medicine Hat’s live map.

They include a mixture of road, alley and sidewalk closures.

⚠️ Hwy 1 northbound

Finishes by May 29

Slowdowns on the Trans Canada Highway northbound out of Medicine Hat will continue for the entire month.

Lanes narrow to one around the Box Springs Northwest exit between Medicine Hat and Redcliff.

Workers are making street light upgrades until the end of May.

⚠️ Seventh Street at Fourth Avenue

Finishes June 4

The intersection of Seventh Street Southwest and Fourth Avenue Southwest is closed for underground infrastructure replacement.

A detour is required during construction.

The north side sidewalk on Seventh Street Southwest leading to the intersection is closed until June 30 at 5 p.m.

This project was originally marked as being completed by May 23.

⚠️ Sixth Avenue area

Ongoing until August 2025

Downtown construction that started in 2024 is making a return in 2025.

It’s a continuation of the utility and surfacing projects for Sixth Avenue Southeast and Third Street Southeast that started last year and brought three intersections to a halt.

Access to businesses will remain open downtown throughout the construction, according to a city news release.

Second Street

May 22 to May 29

Second Street Northeast between 1A Avenue Northeast and Second Avenue Northeast has closed for a manlift setup.

⚠️ Division Avenue

April 1 to July 1

The city is carrying out infrastructure rehabilitation on Division Avenue South between Seventh Street Southeast and Eleventh Street Southeast.

Work is expected to be completed by July 1.

⚠️ Underground

April 28 to May 23

An underground infrastructure replacement project has shut down the intersection of Seventh Street Southwest and Fourth Avenue Southwest.

Work is expected to be completed in May.

⚠️ Sidewalk closure

Finishes May 30

There is a sidewalk closure at 504 Second St. S.E. downtown for the month of May.

That’s during a roof system replacement, the city reports.

A detour is required for pedestrians.

South end

—

⚠️ 17th Street S.E.

March 9 to June 30

The back laneway behind 17th Street Southeast will be closed temporarily.

The laneway is breaking up due to the frost melt and is closed to heavy traffic.

It will remain open to local traffic only.

⚠️ 71 East Glen Dr. S.E.

A full sidewalk closure is taking place at 71 East Glen Dr. S.E. for equipment mobilization.
