Tigers complete sweep of Canes’ to advance to the WHL Finals

Apr 30, 2025 | 11:12 PM

For the first time since 2007, the Medicine Hat Tigers will play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

Matthew Ward led the charge with a pair of special-teams goals, including the game winner on the power play in the second period

Misha Volotovskii and Bryce Pickford added singles, as did Gavin McKenna, tallying the insurance marker on an empty net with 30 seconds left in the game to secure the 5-3 victory.

Specialty teams were the difference in the hockey game.

The Tigers scored three special-teams goals, a pair on the power play, along with a shorthanded beauty for Matthew Ward

Lethbridge made the game competitive in the third period, scoring two goals in the opening six and a half minutes to make it a one-goal game

That is as close as it would get as the Tigers withstood the Hurricanes’ third-period push to secure their spot in the WHL Championship

The Medicine Hat Tigers now await the winner of the West Final between the Spokane Chiefs and Portland Winterhawks.

Spokane leads that series 3-0 with Game 4 taking Friday night in Portland.

No matter the opponent, the Medicine Hat Tigers will have home-ice advantage for the WHL Championship Series.

Game 1 is tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 9.
