Cypress County will no longer operate Welcome Centre in Walsh

Cypress Country will no longer be operating the Welcome Centre in Walsh.

The county had taken over the operation of the building in 2021 on a lease from the province, after it shut down the visitor information centre at the location.

With the building now sold by the province, the county was unable to use the facility again this summer.

Cypress County Reeve Dan Hamilton said they did the best they could to keep it going for the last few years.

“It was a great job that the kids did out there for the summer and they moved people around. The numbers kept getting bigger and bigger every year,” Hamilton said.

“It was working out well. It’s unfortunate that we don’t get it anymore this year, but you know, things move forward.”

Cleo, a cast of a dinosaur found near Irvine over 75 years ago, was among the popular attractions at the Welcome Centre.

It has now found a home in the lobby of the Cypress County office.

Over the four years the Welcome Centre was operated by the county in Walsh, its popularity grew to allow it to be open seven days a week throughout the spring and summer.

Hamilton said he is unsure if they will look at a similar space in the future.

“It’s hard to know at this point. There hasn’t been any discussion on it,” Hamilton said.

“We did think we were going to run it for the summer out there. So bit of a shock that it happened that quick.”

The county doesn’t know who purchased the building and what will be done with it.

Other tourism initiatives in the county are expected to be the focus for the three workers who were going to return to work at the Welcome Centre this year.
