New intercity bus service to connect Medicine Hat with other Alberta cities

A new bus service launching this week called FlixBus will connect Medicine Hat to Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton starting Thursday.

A Flix North America spokesperson said it will mark the first intercity bus connection for the city in several years.

Flix is the parent company of FlixBus and Greyhound Lines. Greyhound previously provided intercity transport to Medicine Hat, but discontinued service across western Canada in October 2018.

“We identified a clear need for better transportation options in southeastern Alberta,” FlixBus told CHAT News in a written statement.

“Medicine Hat is a vibrant community with students, professionals, and families who previously lacked convenient and affordable long-distance travel options,” it added.

“Expanding here allows us to close a critical connectivity gap and provide new mobility solutions to residents.”

FlixBus said Medicine Hat residents can now access key destinations for work, education, health care, and leisure without the need for a personal vehicle or expensive private travel.

FlixBus also offers online booking, real-time bus tracking, free Wi-Fi, and complimentary luggage allowance that it said will make the experience “as smooth and stress-free as possible”.

The company said sustainability is a core pillar of its mission.

“Intercity buses are one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel, with significantly lower CO₂ emissions per passenger compared to cars or planes,” it said.

“Every FlixBus has the potential to remove dozens of personal vehicles from the road, helping reduce congestion and pollution.”

The bus service will operate six days a week, excluding Wednesday.
