Medicine Hat’s municipal audit report coming in June, inspector says

A report based on a non-financial audit of Medicine Hat’s city hall will be publicly released in June, the inspector leading the effort told CHAT News on Monday.

Medicine Hat’s city council requested the inspection from Alberta’s municipal affairs minister last September after months-long leadership crisis sparked by disagreement over procedure and authority.

Ric McIver, the minister, agreed to council’s request and decided to move ahead with the inspection in November after completing an initial preliminary stage that included interviews with members of council and administration.

Many councillors hope the audit will act as a reset ahead of the fall municipal inspection, setting up the next term of council for success. City chief administrator Ann Mitchell said last year an inspection could return the public’s trust in city hall.

Ian McCormack, lead inspector, said in his Monday statement that he’s wrapping up the work.

“That includes including some procedural fairness steps to ensure anyone referenced in the report has an opportunity to provide feedback to me before the report is complete,” McCormack wrote.

McCormack added the release of inspection reports sometimes coincides with a regular council meeting but can also come forward at a special meeting called specifically for its release.

Council as of Monday morning has two regular meetings scheduled for June.
