Medicine Hat’s Root Cellar receives national accreditation

Apr 10, 2025 | 5:17 PM

The Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub in Medicine Hat has been accredited through Food Banks Canada’s Standards of Excellence program.

The Standards of Excellence are used by food banks across the country to guide best practices.

Executive director Melissa Mullis says the process to get the accreditation has taken time.

“It’s been over a year of us working on different policies, procedures, food safe things, just really making sure that we comply with all of the standards, and it’s been a lot of work for sure,” Mullis said.

Proud of the recognition, Mullis adds that it puts them in good standing with both Food Banks Canada and Food Banks Alberta.

The standards make sure that all food banks are operating under the same legislations, regulations, and all doing things with compassion, care, and food safety.

The Root Cellar helped support over 7,000 individuals across the community last year.

Mullis said it’s a huge moment and confirms their team is doing exceptional meaningful work.

“I think getting the accreditation for us is a really big deal because it shows that we’re doing things the right way,” Mullis said.

“That we have client care at the top of our mind, that we have food safe at the top of our mind, that we really want to ensure that we are caring for the people that we serve in the correct way.”

Mullis said being accredited under the Food Banks Canada standards, should help give confidence to donors and those who support them in the community.

Mullis added that every program they run from the emergency food pantry to brown bag lunches, to the healthy bundles is rooted in dignity and connection.

“This accreditation affirms that we’re on the right track, and inspires us to keep growing,” Mullis said.
