Medicine Hat College Rattlers announce new coach for women’s hockey team

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s hockey team has a new head coach.

James King, a college alumnus and former minor sports coach, will take the reins of the women’s hockey program and continue development of an elite level female hockey program in Medicine Hat.

King has coached over two decades within Medicine Hat and is a longtime advocate for female athletic development.

“I’ve been fortunate enough throughout many years of coaching multiple sports, of the do’s and don’ts and what works for me and what works for a program, in my opinion,” King said.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to coach male and female streams for hockey, baseball, soccer, softball, a lot of different avenues, and to be honest, you learn a lot from individual sports of what makes an athlete.”

His track record as a coach has lead to championships across various sports including hockey, soccer, baseball and softball.

King coached teams won provincial hockey 2017 at the U13 A level, and 2018 at the U13 AA level.

As an assistant coach King was part of Medicine Hat’s U18 AAA South Central Alberta Hockey League South Division League Championship.

His success coaching baseball includes the Medicine Hat All-Stars becoming 2019 Little League Canadian Junior Champions.

The women’s team won two league games this past college season in 25 games, building on the one win they had their first official year.

There is a strong familiarity with the team and program for King, as he’s had three daughters that were part of the original Rattlers team.

King adds that he’s just starting to get into the thick of things with the head coaching role, and said there was a lot of great work done by the staff last year, which he wants to add to.

“We are pleased with the hiring of James, and excited to see what he can do with the development of the program going forward,” said Terry Ballard, director of athletics for the Rattlers.
