Medicine Hat to host Alberta’s biggest ringette provincials ever

Mar 12, 2025 | 7:00 AM

Medicine Hat will be the host to about 40 ringette teams and approximately 1,000 athletes this weekend.

The biggest ringette provincials ever hosted in the province will include four different divisions.

Included in those team is the U16-B Medicine Hat Mustangs, who finished in top spot in their division heading into provincials.

Assistant Captain Margot Kerr said she is really proud that they get to host the event.

“I’m really excited that provincials is home this year, especially because our team wasn’t able to make provincials last year,” Keer said.

“Being at home, I’m really excited to have my family members come down and my friends watch me hopefully win, but I’m sure we will.”

Head Coach John Karamanos said Medicine Hat has been a strong ringette community for a lot of years.

“We’ve had a lot of success in the city, and this is just continuing to grow a sport that we’re good at and Medicine Hat’s represented really well,” Karamanos said.

“This weekend coming up is a great example of four very strong Medicine Hat teams, starting from U14-B, U16-B, and we have two large Open B and Open C teams.”

The open categories are for players aged 19 and older.

Captain Jayna Allchurch said with the U16 team having to travel for most games, it’s good to play on home ice.

“It’s really nice. Playing home is good for the girls. Everybody gets to invite their friends to come out and watch,” Allchurch said.

“We’ve always played out of town everywhere because it’s so small ringette, so if we get to play here, it’s fun for all the girls.”

Assistant Captain Leighton Wright is also excited to play on home ice, and is happy with the teams strong season.

“I’m so proud that we have come this far,” Wright said.

“From the start of the year, we have improved so much. It’s crazy,” she added.

“I just love being part of this team and our improvement.”

For Kerr her favourite part of the ringette is more than the game itself.

“Probably just playing with all of my friends and getting to like connect with others and just having that experience of being on a team,” Kerr said.

“Learning leadership and just having that bond with all these girls is just an amazing experience.”

Games will be played Friday through Sunday, at the Big Marble Go Centre, Hockey Hounds, and Kinplex arenas, and are free for the public to attend.
