Redcliff smokestack demolition will take two to three weeks

The last remaining Dominion Glass smokestack has been part of the Redcliff skyline since the 1950s but once demolition starts that view will be no more.

A representative for the CertainTeed facility says the demolition is expected to take two to three weeks.

The timeline for when that will take place is still being finalized.

Since the purchase of the facility by the group in the late 1980s the smokestack has not been used, and is being proactively demolished according to CertainTeed to avoid being a safety issues, as it’s end of life.

The controlled demolition will be done piece-by-piece with waste material being send down the interior of the stack to be collected later, which will allow production to continue at the facility throughout the demolition process.

The representative states that the bricks from the smokestack have been deemed non-hazardous materials and will be discarded, but they are currently looking at options for historic preservation of some bricks to acknowledge the significant cultural history of the stacks in Redcliff.
