Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services celebrates its 125th Anniversary in 2025.

This milestone celebrates over a century of dedication and service to the community, dating back to the formation of the first fire brigade in 1900.

Chief Chad Eakins with the MHFES said that 125 years of service to the community is a significant milestone.

“We look forward to celebrating this milestone year with the community as we honour our history and look to the future,” he said in a statement.

Throughout the year, a series of events and exhibits will invite residents to reflect on the department’s rich history and the contributions of its past and present members.

On June 21, an open House at Station 2 on 1303 Trans Canada Way SE will be held, and on Sept. 13 at Station 1 at 401 Parkview Dr NE.

On Oct. 25, a Firefighter Gala at Co-op Place on 2802 Box Springs Way NW will be hosted by the MHFES.

In addition to these community events, an archival photo exhibit will be on display in the Esplanade lobby in the spring.

This will showcase historic images and moments from the city’s fire service history.

Mayor Linnsie Clark said in a statement that, like other communities, some of the city’s defining features were shaped by devastating fires in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

This particularly refers to the brick buildings in the downtown core.

“Fortunately, over the past 125 years, there have been significant advancements in fire suppression and prevention tools, as well as fire safety legislation and education,” she said.

“These advancements have not only improved the safety of our residents but also help protect the health, safety, and wellness of our firefighters.”

MHFES is also calling on residents to help make this celebration even more special.

If residents have items related to fire service that may hold significant value or historical meaning, MHFES would like to showcase them at the open house events for the greater community.

To share an item, the MHFES asks that a photo be sent with a brief description.
