Jan 24, 2025 | 4:41 PM

The Medicine Hat Public School Division has had information shared with them regarding a data breach that happened through the software program PowerSchool.

The public school division put out a notice to those effected on Friday.

Globally the data breach that was identified by PowerSchool in late December and secured shortly after, has reportedly impacted more than 60 million people worldwide.

The investigation by PowerSchool into the public school division showed that all current and former students and staff from 2010 and onward are included in the breach.

Student data accessed included first and last names, date of birth, home phone numbers, mailing addresses, and Alberta student numbers.

Some student medical information shared with the division was impacted, but no Alberta health numbers.

Guardian details such as first and last names, e-mail addresses, mailing addresses, contact alerts and custody orders were also included in the breach.

Limited staff work-related data, including names, e-mail addresses, and internal identification numbers were accessed.

No financial information was accessed through the data breach.

PowerSchool has engaged with trusted credit reporting agencies to offer two years of complimentary identity protection and credit monitoring to all students and staff whose information was involved in the breach.

The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education was also part of the data breach, and has not yet received any additional information back from PowerSchool as to how their division was impacted.

Prairie Rose Public Schools were not part of the data breach.

*Correction some student medical information shared with the division was impacted, but no Alberta health numbers. Originally it was stated that some Alberta health numbers may have been impacted.
