The Medicine Hat Public Library is hosting a “Wrap and Yap” event, among other activities this month to provide opportunities to those who may feel isolated over the holidays.

Isolation can feel more impactful over the holidays, for those who might not be able to visit family or friends.

The library is hosting its first “Wrap and Yap” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, for gift wrappers to get together and interact.

Chris Brown, head of marketing and community engagement at the Medicine Hat library, hopes it will bring people together to get in the spirit.

“It’s also a good thing for social isolation. We know that can be tough any time of year, but around Christmas time it gets a little bit worse for a lot of people,” he said.

“This would be a way to meet with people, chat with people, see what’s going on, just make connections around the community,” he added.

“Who knows, you might even end up with a whole new friend out of it.”

Brown says that personal wrapping supplies and gifts are required to be brought.

The library will provide warm drinks, Christmas snacks and a comfortable accommodating atmosphere for attendees.

The event will provide fellowship for those who may not have access otherwise over the holidays.

It can also be a place to get away from potential snooping spectators at home.

“Maybe they need to get these presents wrapped away from the prying eyes of their loved ones that may be bursting into a room at home, and that spoils the Christmas surprise,” he said.

“Get together, meet with people, have a good time and hopefully boost a little bit of Christmas spirit for at least an afternoon.”

The Wrap and Yap event will be taking place at the Medicine Hat library again on Dec. 19 at 6 p.m.
