Next wave of Medicine Hat free library cards sponsored by its residents

Library cards continue to be free in Medicine Hat, but it’s now thanks to its residents.

Local sponsors have given to the Medicine Hat Public Library’s “Library Card for Every Hatter” initiative, covering the $5 cost for adult cards.

In the spring of this year, the library began asking people registering or renewing their library card if they would like to pay that $5 forward.

“Our plan was that when we got to $1,000 in pay-it-forward donations, we would get stickers for the cards to show they are free because of the community members who paid it forward,” Chris Brown, the library’s communications head, wrote in a blog post.

“We blew past $1,000 before we knew it,” Brown added.

Library staff had a busy summer — they opened a satellite location at the Big Marble Go Centre — but the stickers are on the cards now, Brown said.

The next 400 cards the library gives out will have stickers to show it is sponsored by “YOU: the MHPL community.”

Brown added a shoutout to the What Matters to Hatters Coalition. The group’s April theme for its Connecting with Care in Our Community campiagn was “Pay It Forward” and the organization encouraged people to do that at MHPL.
