Police make arrest in Medicine Hat’s Southridge neighbourhood

Sep 19, 2024 | 6:40 PM

Police had to fire pepper ball munition to take a male suspect into custody in Medicine Hat’s Southridge neighbourhood on Thursday afternoon.

Members of the Medicine Hat Police Service, including several in tactical gear, conducted a vehicle stop at the 100 block of Sprague Way Southeast around 2:20 p.m., according to a statement.

During the vehicle stop, the male driver — alone in the car — was uncooperative with police instruction and refused to exit the vehicle, police said.

Police used “less-lethal” pepper ball munition, which allowed officers to safely take the male into custody, added the statement.

Medicine Hat police and ALERT officers were seen speaking to residents at Shannon Crescent Southeast late Thursday afternoon.

George Davison Elementary School, located near the incident, briefly activated a hold and secure protocol.

It was put in place while police “dealt with an emergency near our school,” according to a social media post.

The hold and secure lasted from 2:21 p.m. to 2:41 p.m., the school said.

An investigation is ongoing.

No further details were immediately available.
