Naheed Nenshi not running in Lethbridge-West as NDP seeks candidate

The Alberta NDP confirmed on Wednesday that its leader Naheed Nenshi, who does not currently hold a seat in the legislature, will not be running in the Lethbridge-West by-election.

The New Democrats are looking for a candidate for a by-election that has to be called by Jan. 1 Nominations are open to party members who are in good standing.

The NDP secured a seat in the riding in 2023 with the re-election of Shannon Phillips.

Phillips, however, resigned as the MLA at the end of June 2024, part way through her third term in office.

Nenshi said Lethbridge deserves a strong voice in the legislature.

“We have seen phenomenal growth in our party this year, and I am looking forward to members selecting a candidate in a competitive, open, and democratic process,” Nenshi said.

Alberta NDP members will select their candidate for Lethbridge-West on Sept. 7.
