‘Emotional bond is so key’: Medicine Hat expert says parent-child relationship must be nurtured

There’s no other relationship on the planet like the one between a parent and their child, which is why it must be nurtured, a Medicine Hat expert told CHAT News.

There are four different types of attachment styles that can develop a relationship, according to Angela Batista from Keys to Hope Counselling Services.

The relationship can range from secure and stable to ambivalent and dismissive.

Batista said that small or mundane decisions early on, like letting a young child pick the flavour of ice cream, can lead to good self-esteem and a strong relationship.

Parents may feel the need to take a step back once children approach adolescence, but Batista said it’s even more important to be tuned in.

According to Batista, the long term development of a child is directly impacted by a parents presence and attitude.

“What we know is it promotes social and social development, decreases psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression. So, throughout our lifespan, that caregiver bond, that emotional bond is so key to a person’s overall health throughout the lifespan,” Batista said.

Batista said that explaining decisions to children will help with reasoning and critical thinking, further improving self-esteem and the relationship.
